Developing Habits

  • “The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience” by Aditi Nerurkar
    • Great book, talks about burnout and how to overcome it.
    • Change, even if for the good, is stressful on the body. That’s why it’s so hard to sustain big drastic life changes.
    • Do not make more than two life changes at once – sustain for three months before adding another, and that those life changes should be super small and embedded into your life.
    • ALL THIS just to say that if you want to start being more creative or to introduce a creative habit in your life, make it SMALL AND DAILY/FREQUENT
    •  GRIT by Angela Duckworth
    • Replace scrolling time with hobby time!
      • Cecelia mentioned Brick (not sponsored)
  • Creative habits you could start:
    • Knitting/crochet/embroidery/cross stitch
      • 5 minutes when you get home from work
      • Keep it on your coffee table – give it a cute home
    • Drawing
      • Sketch something or doodle or play with designs on a scrap piece of paper during your lunch break
      • You don’t have to have fancy materials or keep your drawing!
    • Sewing:
      • Keep your sewing machine/iron/cutting materials out or in easy to access areas to make it easier to start
      • Do something small every day
      • ACTUALLY DO IT AND DON’T JUST RESEARCH AND BUY NEW PATTERNS AND FABRIC LIKE WE DO
    • Baking:
    • Painting:
      • Try something easy to start and stop – like watercolor
      • Set up a little tray with materials – make it cute!
      • Have small sheets of paper to fill in, so the task isn’t too daunting
    • Writing:
      • Have a google doc/notes app that is easy to access for quick writing.
      •  If you need longer writing sessions, try scheduling them on a repeating schedule (every Tues/Thurs night, or 3 hours on Saturday)
  • Need to make it more enticing?
    • Make it cozy – set your craft project next to a nice lamp with a good blanket
    • Use materials that bring you joy. (Use the good fabric!)
    • Share your hobby with a friend
    • Set a GOAL

Goal Setting

  • SMART
    • Specific: this is your habit
    • Measurable: instead of “knit more” “knit 3 pairs of socks”
    • Attainable: don’t shoot for the moon
    • Relevant
    • Time based: set a deadline
  • REWARDS
    • Earn them! (Better for the environment, your wallet, and your home!)
      • ex) After drawing daily for 2 weeks on scrap paper with a normal pen, I can invest in a sketchbook, and then in another 2 weeks I can get a fun pen
      • ex) I am not buying new fabric until I clear out a bin of scrap fabric.

Our Goals for 2026

    • Habit: Do one creative thing per day for at least 5 minutes
    • Habit: Use up current supplies before buying new.
    • Winter Goal: Finish knitting a pair of mittens.
    • Winter Goal: Sew new large pillowcases.
    • Winter Goal: Make quilt top out of scraps.
    • Winter Goal: Hang up 10 pieces of art.

    • Habit: Replace scrolling with crafting.
    • Habit: Use my crafting stash for projects.
