S1E14: Sustainable Crafting for Earth Month!

Listen on: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube.

WHY You should care about sustainable crafting!

  • Trash doesn’t just disappear
    • Things don’t degrade in a landfill, they just get squished down
    • Everything you’ve ever thrown out is still most likely sitting in a landfill
  • So much effort goes into making/shipping/distributing materials,
    • Disrespectful to the OBJECTS and the PEOPLE involved to just not use them or throw them away
  • Trends come and go – so beware of diving BIG into a new craft
    • Too much stuff you don’t use can take up so much room and feel shameful when you no longer want to use it!

BUY LESS

  • Easy to be inspired and buy supplies – much harder to actually execute
  • Wait to purchase supplies until you’re ready to do the project
  • Finish projects before starting more (tackle that WIP pile!)
  • Shop your stash
    • if you’re not using your stash, donate it/give it away to someone who will!
    • Keep the good juju flowing!
  • Buy versatile things
    • Interchangeable needles
    • Acrylic mix in to make fabric paint
    • Will you be able to use supplies for something else?

BUY MORE INTENTIONALLY

  • Buy quality so you purchase once
  • When you make that purchase, who are you supporting?
  • Theresa’s meat girl
  • If you love your local fabric store, recognize that people need to shop there in order for them to stay in business
    • Caveat: it’s more expensive, do what you can
  • Buy secondhand
    • Facebook Marketplace
    • Estate Sales
    • Buy Nothing Groups
    • Secondhand Craft Stores
    • Thrift stores
    • Estate Sales
  • Borrow
    • From friends & family
    • Libraries often offer non-book items to borrow
    • See if you have a local tool library
