Why I Love the Loungewear Set from Common Stitch

One of the main reasons I wanted to write this Loungewear Set by Common Stitch pattern review is because it’s one of the most versatile and comfortable patterns I’ve ever made. The pieces can be sewn in matching fabric for a faux jumpsuit look. Which is more practical than an actual jumpsuit (no awkward bathroom struggles here!).
I’ve worn multiple versions of this set as pajamas for over two years, and they’re still holding up great. The relaxed fit, practical pockets, and stylish high-low hem on the top make it easy to wear around the house or out and about.
Fabric Choices

I have to highlight how beautifully this pattern works in different fabrics. I’ve sewn it up in a cotton/linen blend, a cozy flannel (with slightly lengthened pants for some warmth in the winter), and a double gauze. All great choices!
The set really shines when sewn in light, breathable wovens. It’s comfortable, looks polished, and keeps you cool during warmer months.
Sizing

I am 5’5″ and 140 pounds. I made the size D and I think it was a good fit. (Yes, a size D, the pattern doesn’t have traditional number sizing.) The pattern is loose fitting and very forgiving. If needed, you could easily size up and gather the pants more.
Elastic Band

My favorite elastic to use in any kind of pants is the 2 inch soft waistband elastic from Dritz. It is so soft, doesn’t squeeze too much, and has great recovery. I use it in all of my pants! It can curl sometimes, so I do suggest making a few rounds of stitching to hold everything in place.
A Great Beginner-Friendly Pattern

This Loungewear Set by Common Stitch pattern review wouldn’t be complete without pointing out how beginner-friendly the pattern is. The instructions are clear, the construction is simple, and the results are truly rewarding.
The top is a fantastic first-garment project for anyone learning to sew. I also appreciate the thoughtful neckline construction, which includes a small facing rather than a bias-bound edge. This makes sewing the neckline much easier for new sewists.
Small Pattern Adjustments I Made

I was surprised to see that for the hems on the shirt the pattern was written to serge the raw edge and simply fold over once and sew. This really clever and a great shortcut. I do like a crisp hemline though and find the double fold adds a bit more weight to help keep the edge of the shirt down.
I’ve done both methods and slightly prefer the double folded hem. I didn’t add anymore length to the short, just kept it to a small hem.

The pattern is also written to serge the elastic to raw hem of the pants and then fold it under. I did this for two pairs of pants and it works fine, but I did struggle to stretch the waistband to match the length fabric and serge all of the edges together at the same time.
I also made a pair with an elastic casing instead. Since the pattern is so forgiving, the extra bit of fabric I used didn’t make much of a difference!
